The Church in the City – National Conference 2010
A National Gathering
On ministry in an urban context

Scots Church Adelaide
Tuesday 28th September – Thursday 30 September

An initiative of the Urban Mission Network, hosted by Scots Church Adelaide

The Church at the Centre of the City: Opportunities and Challenges
Congregations in the heart of the city face a host of challenges and opportunities: ministry to dispersed congregations, the retail sector, office workers, apartment dwellers, the disadvantaged, multicultural worship, … (You can probably add more to this list.)

This national gathering is an opportunity to explore the unique situation of the city church, to make contacts, to network and to learn from others in this ministry.

The gathering allows a high level of participation from participants. Each day begins with a plenary session addressing a significant aspect of city ministry. Workshops explore practical and theoretical issues and share experiences.

A city walk gives us a snapshot of the cultural, educational and political precinct of an Australian city and is a starting point for further conversation.

Evenings have deliberately been left clear to allow time for conversations flowing from the day’s activities and for networking.

The gathering is a step towards forming a community of city congregations across Australia, where we can share experiences and hopes, joys and frustrations, explore ideas and learn from each other.

Highlights from the program
Plenary Sessions
The “Secular” City: Australia 2010. Rev Tim Costello, CEO World Vision Australia. Tim was minister at Collins St Baptist Church, Melbourne, for many years and Mayor of St Kilda. He founded Urban Seed, a not-for-profit Christian outreach service to the urban poor. For many, he is the public voice of the social conscience of Australia.

The City as Contested Space. A panel discussion on the political, commercial, social and cultural pressures that are present in Australia cities. How do we anticipate or respond to these forces in a faithful way? The panel will comprise three UCA lay leaders who have been actively involved as town planners and community advocates in urban planning, policies, protests, planning and decision making over many years.

Inspiration outside our walls: Being Church in the City. Dr Steve Taylor, Director of Missiology at Uniting College. Steve will explore the interfaces between culture, spirituality, ecclesiology and spirituality in the city setting. How do groups impact their urban settings in contemporary Australia?

About us
The Urban Mission Network comprises 31 congregations, faith communities and agencies in South Australia which share a clear understanding of being called to give witness to the love of God in Christ as word and deed in environments which are primarily urban, secular and culturally diverse. We believe that the church must engage with the public sector and local communities in order that the Gospel may bring about both personal and social transformation. Network members all share a clear sense of mission in the wider community and are churches located in neighbourhoods, civic centres, regional centres, and on main thoroughfares.

UCA city congregations in Adelaide: Scots Church is located near to universities, hospital, retail trading and cultural centres, Pilgrim Church is adjacent to office buildings, local government and indigenous places, Maughan Church is nearby the markets, shares space with Uniting Care and hosts multicultural congregations, Brougham Place has new initiatives in worship, music and the arts, City Soul is a missional church, the EcoFaith Community meets in the parklands.
